Anybody know where to find a good, cheap wench in Austin?
Not that kind of wench! I mean like a hand-crank wench for hoisting up heavy objects. In a marine supply store, maybe? And pulleys, too. I'll need a couple of those.

Harbor Freight, not too far from your neck of the woods, has the goods you're looking for at the cheap price. Let me know when you're free for a shopping outing and I'll try and come with...or you might Stebusan or James for the structural engineering brain power.
Missed ya at the Happy Hour. The bar was...very close to the house...and we had a great turnout. Lots of new faces thanks to Jerry and Lola. Where's the next one gonna be at? Weather's getting warmer...Scholtz Garden perhaps?

Harbor freight has several options-
*hand winches like you see on boat trailers to pull the boat into place on the trailer- the worm drive ones allow one to lower the load more smoothly with less chance of dropping the load. The regular geared setup has a lever that disengages the one way pawn and makes it easy to drop the load(very handy for dumping the boat into the lake), I suspect the 'accident' at the gwnn party years ago was related to this

*chain hoist a lit more expensive but much smoother action and less effort and that clicking noise that is magnified by blindfolds

these frequently go on special where the 2ton is like 39.99
*electric winch- suitable for the set up at kens or pj's garage- get a least the 800 lb version and make sure to buy an AC version if you plan on using it indoors
